About Ko Tao
Ko Tao, or "Turtle Island," is a tropical island of Thailand. With a very small population of just over 1,000 residents, the island's exclusivity makes it a preferred vacation destination. The locals thrive on an economy supported by tourism, mainly scuba diving.
The island got its name from the thousands of green turtles that were reintroduced to the island after tourism influx took a negative toll on the ecosystem. Now, Ko Tao is better protected against these effects and the water is a healthy home to many reef dwelling species. Ko Tao is one of the world's most popular destinations for scuba diving and sees millions of tourists each year.
Hiking, snorkeling, rock climbing and beaches are also major attractions in Ko Tao. Roads may seem diminished, but the seclusion of the island keeps the advancement of roads at bay. However, motorbikes are a popular mode of transportation in the area and tourists can get on and off the island by ferry boat.
