Senegal's capital Dakar is located on the Cap-Vert peninsula, which sticks out westward into the Atlantic Ocean. Once a tiny village, Dakar has transformed into a cosmopolitan city with modern comforts, luxuries and amenities. But stroll the streets, and you'll quickly see that the city holds onto its history, heritage, and traditions. Senegal is famous for its culture of hospitality, locally called "teranga". So visitors to Dakar can expect to be warmly welcomed. Explore the traditional Médina quarter, and see the Grande Mosquée with its towering minaret. Mingle with the friendly locals at buzzing markets selling fresh fish, spices and handmade arts and crafts. Take in the different smells that waft down alleyways and people-watch in colorful, diverse neighborhoods. Step into a restaurant and enjoy delicious Asian and European dishes, followed by a 'Café Touba', traditional spiced coffee. And in the evening, sip on a sunset drink overlooking the sea before discovering the city's vibrant nightlife and dancing to local mbalax music.
Dakar is a vibrant city with welcoming locals. International visitors and expats tend to live in accommodation in the center and west of the peninsular, including downtown Plateau (the commercial district), Fann, Point E, Mermoz, Sacre-Coeur, Ouakam, Mamelles, Almadies, Ngor and Virage. If you prefer to live and work in the city center and don’t mind the noise, Plateau is a good option. The neighborhoods of Point E, Fann and Mermoz are close to downtown but tucked away from the frenzy. You’ll find wide streets with big houses and gardens. Almadies, Ngor and Virage are great choices if you want to be close to the ocean, with access to a range of bars and restaurants. The cost of living in Dakar is reasonable. Expect to pay about $1,700 per month, including rent. Rent ranges from $350 to $700, depending on which neighborhood you choose to live in. Co-working spaces in Dakar include Jokkolabs Dakar, Ofisini, and Regus - Dakar, Les Almadies. The best to visit Dakar is from November to June when the temperatures both day and night are pleasantly warm in the 70s. It’s also the best time for fishing and seafood.

Co-living, also known as co-housing, house-sharing, or room-sharing, is a growing trend in big cities across the country. Co-living is when a group of people—often strangers—come together to share common living spaces, save money, and enjoy a more affordable lifestyle. Apartment buildings dedicated to co-living situations will offer 2 or 3 bedroom units with common areas including a living room, kitchen and dining area. Bedrooms and bathrooms may be private or shared. Co-living differs from a typical shared rental (roommate) situation in that co-living spaces are frequently furnished, don’t require long leases, and almost always include WiFi and utilities. They can also include housekeeping services and some even offer catered functions for tenants, housemates, and their guests. Co-living property managers handle billing and repairs of the building, generally through an app. The typical demographic enjoying a co-living lifestyle are millennials and young professionals in large cities and tech hubs such as San Francisco or Austin, but they are also starting to pop up in cities around the world. People of all ages who find themselves in need of affordable housing are increasingly looking to co-living as a viable option.
