About Fes

Fes is a city of about 1 million inhabitants in north-east Morocco. It’s the nation’s second-largest city, and is considered to be the cultural capital, earning nicknames like the “Mecca of the West” and the “Athens of Africa”. Fes was first founded during the 8th century and grew quickly, largely thanks to the arrival of Arab immigrants from Tunisia and the Iberian Peninsula. It’s location helped cement its economic and trade importance, built along the Fez River to the north of the Atlas Mountains, putting it at a crossroad between major cities like Tangier, Casablanca, Rabat, and Marrakesh. The historic walled Medina (old town) of Fes el-Bali is where you’ll find the best-preserved historic architecture and cultural institutions. This includes the University of Al Quaraouiyine, the oldest in the world, and the Chouara Tannery, the oldest and largest of the three tanneries in Fes, operating continuously since the 11th century. The Fes el-Jdid area dates to the 13th century, and is home to much of the city’s Moorish structures. The more modern Ville Nouvelle area dates from the French colonial period and is the largest region of the city.

Co-livings Spaces in Fes

Fes has a very reasonable cost of living, especially for a city of its size. A one-bedroom apartment in the heart of the city only costs about $300-$400 per month including utilities. This makes it one of the best cities for early-career nomads, retirees, or anyone who needs to keep a close eye on their budget. Most of the furnished apartments available in Fes have a minimum stay length of 30 days. For shorter stays, a hostel or long-term hotel could be a better choice. Just keep in mind they’ll usually cost more per night, so a 30-day lease may still be the more affordable option depending on your situation. A coworking space can be a great way to find a community of remote workers in Fes. Bridges to the Future is an incubator as well as a coworking space, and an ideal spot for entrepreneurs, start-ups, and business-minded freelancers. Creative nomads will want to check out Creative Space, while O’Work is one of the top-rated general coworking spaces in the city.

What is Co-living?

Co-living, also known as co-housing, house-sharing, or room-sharing, is a growing trend in big cities across the country. Co-living is when a group of people—often strangers—come together to share common living spaces, save money, and enjoy a more affordable lifestyle. Apartment buildings dedicated to co-living situations will offer 2 or 3 bedroom units with common areas including a living room, kitchen and dining area. Bedrooms and bathrooms may be private or shared. Co-living differs from a typical shared rental (roommate) situation in that co-living spaces are frequently furnished, don’t require long leases, and almost always include WiFi and utilities. They can also include housekeeping services and some even offer catered functions for tenants, housemates, and their guests. Co-living property managers handle billing and repairs of the building, generally through an app. The typical demographic enjoying a co-living lifestyle are millennials and young professionals in large cities and tech hubs such as San Francisco or Austin, but they are also starting to pop up in cities around the world. People of all ages who find themselves in need of affordable housing are increasingly looking to co-living as a viable option.
